R9 PERSONAL PROTECTION DEVICE


R9 — a personal protection device designed to be attached to elements of a person’s gear.

The device is used to enhance the protective properties of equipment, including:

  • body armor;
  • helmets and other headgear;
  • protective clothing;
  • knee and elbow protection;
  • footwear;
  • other elements of personal gear.

The use of R9 helps reduce the probability of injury from bullets and shrapnel when used together with protective equipment.

R9 does not replace standard personal protective equipment and should not be considered an absolute guarantee of protection.

Construction

R9 is a compact plate made of polymer and plastic material, measuring 20 × 10 × 1 mm.

Thanks to its small size, the device can be conveniently placed on various elements of gear without interfering with their use.

Principle of operation

The device operates by interacting with the existing background electromagnetic field of the environment and creating an additional protective effect near the point of placement.

The estimated effective radius of the device is about 30 cm.

Maximum effectiveness is achieved when the device is placed directly on the gear intended to protect the person.

Placement

R9 is recommended to be placed on elements of a person’s gear.
The most common placement options are:

  • on body armor;
  • on helmets and headgear;
  • on protective clothing;
  • in body armor pockets;
  • in chevrons and patches;
  • inside knee and elbow protectors;
  • on footwear, in places protected from mechanical damage.

The device may also be sewn into clothing or gear elements during manufacturing.

It is also possible to place the device in a separate fabric pouch, patch, or pocket and then attach it to the required piece of gear.

In theory, the device may also be worn as a pendant around the neck, but placement on clothing or protective gear is considered more effective.

The required number of devices is determined experimentally, depending on the type and area of the protected equipment.
For body armor, 1–2 devices are usually sufficient.

Mounting recommendations

For reliable and safe placement, it is recommended to:

  1. Put the device into a fabric pouch, pocket, chevron, or other protective holder.
  2. Attach this holder to the clothing or gear from the inside or outside.
  3. Choose a location where the device will be protected from severe mechanical damage.

To make a simple fabric cover, two pieces of fabric are sufficient: the device is placed between them, after which the fabric is stitched around the perimeter to create an enclosed space.

Physical properties

The R9 device:

  • retains its properties during prolonged immersion in water;
  • withstands temperatures from −60 °C to +125 °C;
  • withstands washing, including boiling wash;
  • remains functional under normal operating conditions.

If cut or subjected to severe mechanical damage, the device may lose its properties.

Features of use

When using the device, the following should be taken into account:

  • exposure to very strong electromagnetic fields may temporarily weaken or block its operation;
  • After such exposure, the device may require time to recover its properties.
  • increasing the number of devices may enhance the overall protective effect;
  • Group use of devices may enhance the overall protective effect for the whole group.

R9 has an inertial effect.
After being placed on clothing or gear, it begins to work in approximately 24 hours.
After being removed from the gear, its residual effect may remain for more than 24 hours.

Use with body armor

Using R9 with body armor is one of the main applications of the device.

The device may be placed:

  • in body armor pockets;
  • in patches and chevrons;
  • inside covers and textile elements;
  • in other areas of the body armor where damage to the device is excluded.

For body armor, one or two devices are usually sufficient, although the exact number depends on the design of the item and the conditions of use.

Testing recommendations

The device should be tested in accordance with the standards of the country where its use is intended.

When testing, the following should be considered:

Inertial effect
It is advisable to place the device on the test plate at least 48 hours before testing begins.

Separate testing
For comparison, it is recommended to use two test plates: one with the device and one without it.

Distance between samples
A test plate with the device and a test plate without the device should not be placed closer than 2 meters to each other.

Influence on surrounding objects
During testing, it is advisable to avoid storing or transporting the device together with weapons, ammunition, body armor, and test plates if the goal is to obtain the чистый comparative result.

Typical testing mistakes

The most common mistakes are:

  • storing test samples with and without the device together;
  • transporting weapons and ammunition together with the device before testing;
  • using the same test plate with alternating attachment and removal of the device;
  • attaching the device immediately before testing.
